Silence..........
…………In a moment of Silence
In the evening, I take a moment to be Still, to slow down, take a breath and chill.
The silence is like a beautiful shawl being wrapped around me as I sit and
look at the frozen river. The river is a spectacular piece of nature with
its many moods and seasons. While sitting, I noticed my grandmother’s
quilt sitting on the end of the bed.
The cherished quilt is old but not really yellowed with time.
When I see the quilt, I think of my grandmother being with me.
My mind wanders to how she made the quilt with so few resources, however,
she made it with love. I have always wanted to paint a quilt. I am too
impatient to try and piece one.
An idea takes wings as I sit there with the beautiful piece of art, the quilt,
in front of me. I could paint a piece of fabric and put it together with quilt
batting and fabric back for someone to quilt for me.
What would I paint? What colours would I choose? What design would
I make on the fabric……only one painted picture or small pictures that tell
a story or abstract or what else? The ‘what else’ turned into an interesting
idea as I scrolled through Pinterest searching for inspiration only to discover
thread sketching.
I am off and running with the ideas of thread sketching my design then
painting the design that was stitched. Sometimes I get carried away
with my ideas and go too big and lose interest so I decided to do blocks.
Blocks of sunflowers.
The photos show the three blocks that I drew on the white cotton,
stitched the lines on the sewing machine and then painted the blocks
just like I paint a canvas.
I thought the fun part would be using colour to bring the stitched designs
to life. The fun part was stitching the drawing. Nothing else existed in
the studio while I stitched. I absolutely loved the process.
In a moment of silence I was graced with a creative idea.
